Professor R. C. Patel

Prof. R C Patel graduated in Mechanical (1954) and Electrical Engineering (1955) with honors and at top of his class from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Gujarat, India.  After that Prof. Patel went to England on scholarship for further studies and obtained Master of Science from University of Birmingham.

After returning to India, he joined Faculty of Technology and Engineering, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He held various teaching positions in the college and became Professor of Mechanical Engineering (1968), Principal of Polytechnic (1975-77), Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering (1976-1985) and Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Engineering (1983-1985). Prof. Patel also served as Vice Chancellor of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda from 1988 to 1990.

He was a brilliant student and teacher. He wrote many engineering books on subjects like Machine Design, Hydraulics, Heat Engines and various Engineering subjects. He was very popular with students and was liked by students and staff.

C. J. Karamchandani

Chetandas Jethanand Karamchandani - (May 1, 1911 - February 21, 2001) was  a scholar, teacher and author. In 1933, he graduated at top of his class in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and obtaining first class with Gold Medal from N. E. D. College , Karachi. He was on staff of N.E.D. College  as Workshop Superintendent before partition.

After partition in 1947 he immigrated to Baroda, Gujarat as a refugee and soon after that he joined Kalabhavan, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He retired from Polytechnic, M. S. University in 1971 as Senior Lecturer. He received numerous honors and recognitions during his tenure at the University.

In addition to being a teacher, in 1962 he co-authored Heat Engines Volume I, II, III and Elements of Mechanical Engineering  for Civil Engineering with Professor  R.C. Patel. Eighteenth and the last edition of these books were published in 1997. In 1987 these books were selected by Government of India for translation in Hindi. He remained very active in revising and updated these books until his death in 2001. These books remained very popular and remained one of the best selling text books in the field of Heat Engines and Thermodynamics for many years.

He was strong supporter of good education at all levels of education. He was a cofounder of an Elementary and High School in Baroda and remained on its board for many years. He was also an avid sportsman and served as Coach and Manager of many sports teams from the M.S. University of Baroda.

To honor their legacy, their families have decided to publish these books online for the benefit of all the students and educators in the field of Heat Engines and Thermodynamics. These books  can be downloaded at no cost.
